About us
Galerija BelArt is a private gallery founded in 1998, operating from its main space at Bul. Mihajla Pupina 17 in Novi Sad, Serbia. It is dedicated to artists, art enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone who sees art as an important aspect and inspiration for a humane way of living. The gallery focuses on modern artists of the second half of the 20th century and contemporary trends in Serbian art.
Galerija BelArt offers a wide range of art-related activities – organizing exhibitions and art events, publishing art books and catalogues, selling artworks, and providing various services in art handling and consultancy. Its professional portfolio includes services such as mediation in art sales and purchases, obtaining permits for exporting artworks, packing, transportation, and insurance of art objects.
For art lovers and those looking to start or develop their art collections, the gallery offers services such as collection advisory, interior decoration of private and corporate spaces, marketing and PR support, as well as organizing bespoke events according to client preferences.
In 2010, the gallery was formally established by the BelArt Kontakt association, aimed at strengthening the position of contemporary art and culture in society through educational activities, support for artistic creation, and promotion both nationally and internationally. The gallery collaborates with numerous institutions and galleries at home and abroad.
Among its notable initiatives, the gallery was one of the founders of the Sava Šumanović Award for Visual Arts (1998), established awards for art criticism Vertikala (2012), organized the Danube Dialogues Contemporary Art Festival (2013–2022), as well as the Street Galleries on Štrafa, dedicated to showcasing emerging artists.
DEVOTED TO ART
Danube Dialogues
Danube Dialogues Festival is a multimedia, mosaic-style festival held in gallery and alternative spaces in Novi Sad and other locations along the Danube. Founded in 2013, it serves as a platform for presenting and following current trends in the art of the Danube region. After ten annual editions, the festival was transformed into a biennial event in 2022.
To date, the festival has featured over 400 artists, curators, and art theorists from the wider Danube macro-region, including Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and the Czech Republic. The People’s Republic of China was a guest country at the festival in 2019, while Japan was featured in 2022 as part of the Novi Sad European Capital of Culture project.
This unique international event continues to grow, gaining increasing recognition in the region and positioning Novi Sad and Serbia as key hubs for international artistic and cultural collaboration in the Danube area.
Sava Šumanović Award
Sava Šumanović (1896–1942) is one of the most important painters of Serbian and Yugoslav art of the 20th century, a man with a refined sensitivity to the vibrations of his time, whose work is filled with universal meanings.
In an effort to continuously affirm the significance of his work and to effectively and encouragingly contribute to the dynamic development of artistic ideas on the Serbian art scene, the BelArt Gallery, the Center for Visual Culture Zlatno oko, and the Art Expo of the Novi Sad Fair established an award for visual arts in 1999, named in his honor.
Thanks to the renown of Šumanović’s name, as well as the high standards applied in selecting previous recipients—who are among the most important figures in contemporary Serbian art—this award has grown into one of the most prestigious recognitions in the field of visual arts in Serbia. The quality of the awarded artists is also recognized internationally, and they continue to gain recognition beyond our country on the stages of global art centers.
Gallery on Štrafta
The Gallery on Štrafta project is a unique initiative launched by the gallery in collaboration with the Red Cross of Novi Sad and the Rotary Club Novi Sad Dunav, aimed at showcasing and promoting young artists.
Štrafta is a famous promenade in Novi Sad, located on Mihajla Pupina Boulevard (from No. 9 to 19), which in the 1980s was a cult gathering spot where young people would stroll in the evenings, socialize, flirt, joke, laugh, and share stories and witty remarks.
In 2020, the Rotary Club Novi Sad Dunav renovated the display window on the Red Cross building, giving Novi Sad a new outdoor street gallery.
The annual program of monthly exhibitions is carried out under the mentorship of BelArt Gallery, in collaboration with the Academy of Arts, the Little Prince Foundation, and SULUV. At the end of the yearly exhibition cycle, a group exhibition and charity auction are organized, featuring works by the artists presented throughout the year.
The Gallery on Štrafta continues the traditionally successful collaboration between two global humanitarian organizations, recalls the forgotten cultural heritage of our city, and revitalizes the once-famous Štrafta as a space for public art initiatives.
